Winnipeg Skimming Card Alert

Posted by SB in May 6th 2008

Winnipeg debt card users have been told to double-check their debt card statements after police confirmed complaints of debt card fraud.

The commercial crime unit are investigating reports of at least two Winnipeg financial institutions where debt card information was harvested from a skimming device, somewhere in the city, after users using their cards had funds removed from their accounts.

Remi Bisson of Caisse Populaires credit union, which experienced skimming from their users accounts, said yesterday that the losses incurred by their clients will be covered by the institution’s insurance policy. He added that if any fraud is suspected the debit card is immediately cancelled.

Boiler Room Scam Targeting the UK

Posted by SB in May 2nd 2008

An insider claims there are hundreds of boiler rooms in Spain targeting the UK.

The insider dealer from one of the boiler rooms in Spain says thousands of young Britons are being sucked into the business. “They go out for extended holidays and work in a boiler room for someone, like it and want to stay on. They can see some of us walking round with 20 grand watches on without a care in the world, earning stupid money”

The biggest boiler rooms would have around 20 salesmen watched over by a floor manager and backed up by two chief dealers. Then there are a couple of “loaders” who pursue investors who have already been conned once tried to wheedle the rest of their savings out of them and “sloppers”, whose job is to trick victims into paying an upfront fee for help in trying to get their money back.

The police have confirmed that they believe that losses from the boiler room fraud are much larger than has previously been thought. They put the figure at a least half a billion pounds but probably more than that and that puts it ahead of losses from credit card and debit card fraud and it’s probably the biggest fraud affecting large numbers of people in Britain today.

There’s no honour among thieves in Saskatoon.

Posted by SB in May 2nd 2008

Some Saskatoon locals have learnt the hard way that there is no honour among thieves when they tried to buy stolen, knocked down priced, plasma TV’s.

Police from Saskatoon warned the public on Wednesday about the scam which involves a man phoning random people to offer them stolen plasma screened TV sets for hundreds of dollars below the recommended retail price. The man would then arrange to meet any potential buyers at a given location. He would request the money upfront for the plasma screens and leave. That would be the last the buyers would see of the man and their money. None of the buyers received their TV sets.

The police added that the swindler has also been frequenting bars and pubs in the Saskatoon area offering people the same type of offer.

Police also took the time to warn people that purchasing any stolen property is a criminal offence.

Victoria University Phishing Scam

Posted by SB in May 1st 2008

One of New Zealand’s oldest universities, Victoria University has been hit by computer hackers known as “Spear Phishers”.

Spear phishing is a highly targeted phishing attack where Spear phishers send emails that look bona fide to all the members or employees within a certain organization, government agency, organization, company or group.

It is the latest in a number of attacks carried out on South Island universities where the hackers aim to steal student and staff login details.

Victoria University E-government expert Miriam Lips, who is the Victoria University E-government expert, says the problem is getting more common in New Zealand and that a number of staff at Victoria University have been targeted by emails which ask for their passwords and login details.

Ms Lips says it is crucial that when universities learn that when any such campaign is happening that they immediately warn their staff.

She adds that people are often very trusting of emails that appear to be from valid organizations and that there is not enough awareness of the issue yet.
